Scottish SN Judo Group wins Sports Council for Glasgow's "Club of the Month" Award

The Sports Council for Glasgow recently launched a new award scheme for club of the month. Following the submission of a 200 word nomination, the Scottish SN Judo Group won the "Club of the Month" award for November 2010. The group received a certificate and recognition on the Sports Council for Glasgow's website.

Bronze for Team GB at Dutch Open Championships

Andrew Smith (Clyde JC) and Richard Cooke (Edinburgh JC) helped Britain win a bronze medal in the team event on 19th September in Utrecht. Competing with one man short in a 7-man team event Team GB did very well to win 3rd place, particularly as several of the team were also fighting one weight above their own category.

In the individual event on the 18th, Andrew won a gold medal and Richard a silver. Other Scottish players taking part were John Ludick (Jidel JC) and John Kane (Aberdeen JC), both winning silver medals.

Two Scottish SN Players Selected for Team GB

Both Andrew Smith (Clyde JC) and Richard Cooke (Edinburgh JC) have been selected to represent the senior Team GB at the Dutch Open Championships in September. This event is a fore-runner to a proposed official EJU European Championship in which competitors will be competing within the officially recognised senior weight categories. Richard is in the −90kg category and Andrew in the +100kg.

There is no youth Team GB event planned until next year, when a team will be selected to participate in the Beverwijk Championship in April 2011.

Scottish SN Judo Group meets two Olympians

Members of the Scottish SN Judo Group were thrilled and excited to be visited at the May training session by British Team member and past European Champion Sarah Clark. Sarah, who originally comes from the North East of England and now lives in Edinburgh, has represented Scotland on numerous occasions including the Commonwealth Games.

Sarah was accompanied by her personal coach Billy Cusack who is also an Olympian (Barcelona) and currently is a British Men's Team Coach. Scottish SN Group member Richard Cooke is well known to both Sarah and Billy, as they are all members of the very successful Edinburgh Judo Club.

Sarah, who is currently recovering from an operation on her right elbow, said she was delighted at last to meet the group and was very impressed by their achievements. Billy also commented favourably on the level of judo on display and that the SN group was a perfect example of the old saying - "Judo is for everyone". Both Sarah and Billy said they look forward to attending further group training sessions and hope to attend our Annual Awards Dinner later in the year.
