BJA Special Needs Player of the Year

Congratulations to Christopher Murphy (Pro Judo) who recently won British Judo's Special Needs Player of the Year award. He was selected by the BJA Inclusion Commission as being an "ambassador for the sport" both on and off the mat and for his many achievements. Chris and his family enjoyed the Awards Dinner which was held at the sumptuous setting of St George's Park Hotel, Burton-on-Trent.

JudoScotland 2013 Programme for Disabled Judoka

Training Sessions at the National Dojo

Following on from the success of the first national training session for disabled judoka held at the National Dojo in December last year, JudoScotland has organised a programme of further training sessions for 2013.

Stephen Somerville (JudoScotland's Education & Development Grow Executive) has organised four sessions to be held at the National Dojo at Ratho. The first session is on Sunday 24th February from 1-3pm and the guest coach will be Sally Conway, a London 2012 Olympian and British team member. The other session dates can be found on our calendar. These sessions are open to all judoka with a disability (physical, sensory or learning) as are all the Scottish SN Judo training sessions.

New Events

JudoScotland are also supporting the development of a competition programme for disabled judoka. Currently the only regular annual event in Scotland is the East of Scotland Championships. This year two new events are being added to the programme.

The first is a new event being included in the Bupa Charity Open which will be held at the Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility in Motherwell on Sunday 9th June. Later in the year there are plans for another event to be held in the Glasgow area. JudoScotland are currently communicating with Glasgow City Council and are hopeful that the city's sports strategy for judo will incorporate this new event. A tentative date of Sunday 24th November has been identified, with the venue to be confirmed.

Players, parents and coaches interested in finding out more about JudoScotland's plans for disability judo can e-mail Stephen at stephensomerville@judoscotland.com or telephone 0131 333 2981.
