Silver for Scottish SN Athlete at the Special Olympics World Summer Games

Congratulations to Christopher Murphy (Pro JC) on winning silver at the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles. Chris was one of 6 judoka selected to compete for GB in the largest multisport event in the world this year.

After 3 days acclimatisation and light training at Calabasas, the team moved to the athletes' village in Los Angeles, stopping en-route at a red carpet reception given by the British Consul to LA. Here Chris had the chance to meet Audley Harrison.

The opening ceremony was held at the Los Angeles Coliseum, the venue for the 1984 Olympic Games. 6,500 athletes representing 165 countries paraded into a stadium which was full to capacity.

Divisioning on Tuesday placed Chris in a pool of 4 judoka and he then competed on Wednesday. He was unlucky to lose his first fight to a player from Costa Rica, but bounced back to win his next two fights against Swedish and Russian judokas earning him a well-deserved silver medal.

This was a once in a lifetime experience with the opportunity to meet and compete against players from outside Europe and make many new friends.
